Anderson's Personal
This page will be a little philosophical & how I see things...
Once... long ago... we were part of a great family when my sister, Carol Lea (who lives in Spokane/Phoenix) and I were raised by our grandparents, Frank (Pap) and Ruth (Gog) Henderson at 718 Santa Fe in Larned, KS... through the 4th grade. Pap & Gog are still my heroes and were like parents & I still miss them! Very, very early in life Pap taught me how to play five card stud and draw poker with a $1 buy in and I learned to play the hand dealt or fold'em! Each hand was important and had a price... but there would always be another opportunity... but only if you kept a stake... in cash! Pap, who was very assertive and strong willed, also taught me not to bray back at an ass! He was born on November 30, 1884, a great golfer in his youth, a Kansas state champion, college graduate and served as a sergeant in the Kansas State Guard in the first World War, had a state-wide commercial general contracting business before the great depression... followed by a successful local real estate business until his death at 72 in 1956 when I was 15! Tough cookie with great personal character... a rock... for sure!
After high school in 1959, a year at Denver U on a basketball scholarship studying Accounting and my first TX residency in Beaumont in 1960 to study accounting at Lamar Tech, LaFon and I were really on our own. We got married in 1962 while in the Army (1960 - 1963) after graduation from the Army Language School in Monterey, CA and finished an Accounting BS & an MBA in August, 1967 at San Jose State University. Fon & I remain a great team and have done it all on our own.
I have kept "Attitudes/Goals/To Do lists" for many years.... to keep us focused. Now the list is quite simple:
Always healthy, positive, stress-free, cash strong & plan ahead!
In 1983 after Tawny graduated from UNC in CO, we moved to Tulare, CA, formed a corporation, and started a financial consulting business. (being employees was never our thing!) We definitely had the "enjoy the moment attitude", a solid family relationship and worked hard to fund the fun things... but didn't plan for the future at all... but did spend freely & traveled extensively... Australia, Fiji, Caribbean, Europe, Mexico, Central America, Baja & Hawaii.
After Tawny got married in 1993 & our individual 35th high school reunions in 1994 & 1995, we both decided it was time for Fon & I to build for our future and to dramatically change our goals, direction and spending patterns. In 1996 we were "finally "ready to roll" on a retirement building strategy at 55", sold our home, retired our consulting business and started with 9 waterfront lots, a CA General Contractor's license and a new residence/office/model home... investing everything in the new business in the desert by the Sea... L. Anderson, Inc. It was a real challenge & a multi-year project... but we knew it could be done if we did it right and stayed with it! Over the 9 years we bought 36 lots, sold 25 waterfront lots, got 9 back, sold the model home, made more wise investments within our IRAs and had enough cash and receivables to retire to TX in 2005 before finishing the project at the Sea... but will see it through the remaining 20 waterfront lots in Desert Shores, CA. Just waiting for the "right time"!
Our good buddy Jet, the big black bear & last dog for awhile, died on September 7, 2005. He had been with us for nearly 12 years. He loved to lay on his rug on the front porch in Boerne looking for the deer, squirrels, and cars passing by. Miss Daisy, Jet's roommate, and our favorite lady, died in 2003 in Baja after 14 years with us. Patches - died in Tulare, CA after 14 years, the ball player, will always be remembered as the smartest dog on earth! Can't top that trio of dogs anywhere for 35 years of continuous companionship. Now we have a black cat from next door that has adopted us... his name is "Cat".
Every six months my VA doctor confirms my health is A-OKAY & improving ... so I remain on a lifetime program to improve the health numbers... weight, blood pressure, TSH & cholesterol with calorie & diet control plus "ramped" up exercise with emphasis on hitting aerobic balance at 85% of the maximum heart rate. It is always great to confirm "good health" in May & November.
Fon is healthy too according to her doctor who she sees annually in May! Her numbers get better every year too.
So I remain a "free-thinking, independent" that hopes President Obama remains successful.
Our dentist is also in the same complex as Fon's doctor along with gas pumps, a new Brookshire market,& Ace Hardware in the Village of Salado... two miles from our front door. SO CONVENIENT! Malls, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, Academy, Lowes & Home Depot are 15 miles north in Temple or 24 miles south in Georgetown.
Feeling better every day and golfing better too!
