Yes... our 6th year in Texas!
2010 - Our best decade... for sure... Gasoline $2.47/gallon... cool weather and nice rain showers already in September. Perfect time in TX... daily golf at Mill Creek, PGA golf, Ranger baseball, Salado JV football with Mike as QB, and the RV & Smart are "ready to roll" between December & February on our annual - month long, winter get-a-way along the Gulf coast that was replaced this winter with a few days on the beach in San Juan, PR in February only to return to a very rare trace of snow. The Salado girls won state in golf. Ta's Boerne house closed in June, she and the boys took us out for Father's Day, the entire family was at the Lake this summer with Mike's jet ski & now their pool & spa are ready & the boys are back in school. August was very hot & very dry! Dan & Joy are now in OK & will arrive in Salado next weekend.
Fon's 3rd Ace!
7/2/2009 - Mill #6 par 3 -
141 yards - 5W
2009 - Almost had to swim a few laps of life... Gas $2.43/gallon... 29 inches of rain for 2009. We had a nice, relaxed visit and two rounds of golf with Dan & Joy via Southwest to Centennial, CO for 4 days in June. Played two new courses in May... Forest Creek in Round Rock and Olde Page in Tulsa while visiting Clyde, Wanda & Donna... fun time. We switched to Horizon Bank in Salado... a perfect fit for us. We enjoyed Clyde & Wanda's short visit and golf in July. We also had a nice Thanksgiving dinner at our house with all the Richardsons. Andy & Mark played some golf. 8" rain resulted in flash floods in both our creeks & swiftly put 22" of water in our RV garage, 10" in our car garage and 6" seeped in & through most of our house between 3:45 & 4:15 p.m. on 9/11/2009. Interior walls & doors, some furniture & personal items... basically anything touching the floor was damaged. We missed some golf & spent some money... but no big deal... we were okay. The casa was back together after 6 weeks! In between rains we went to Shreveport for a three day break... rain there too... so we came back to work on the house. The next day former clients from 25 years ago in Tulare visited us for an afternoon and dinner. .. nice time! The golf course remained wet... almost 16" of rain in 30 days was too much, too quickly... several creek overflows since the 9/11 incident made keeping 18 of the 27 holes of the golf course open a real challenge! We averaged 4 pars/ea by late summer 2009... steady improvement... 6 pars and 8 fairways hit our best.
2008 - A near perfect year... Gas
hit a low of $1.29/gallon...
just
enough rain, 30" in 2008. A little better than bogey golf... 1+
pars/ea/round! Played golf and had
most of the Richardsons over for Thanksgiving
& Christmas eve.
Clean bill of health again from VA... check-ups changed
to every six months from every four months!
Fon had her best 9 hole round on 11/9 & mine was on 9/29... a birdie and 4
pars! We enjoyed a golf packed
five day visit with Jerry and Carol here in Salado....
eighteen holes per day.
Donna & Wanda stayed three nights and left with
the
Tracker. The September trip to CA was fun... played golf 5 times in San
Jose, Santa Cruz & Pacific Grove, on three nice muni courses, saw everything
we wanted to see from our past... boardwalk, beaches, our first house, & ate
lots of clam chowder. We bought a 2008 Smart Cabriolet... our day-trip car & RV dinghy... keeping the
2007 Nissan Quest van... both great cars...
40+ mpg and 20+
mpg! We
switched to Horizon Bank & were playing bogey
golf most days in August (6 days a week X 9
holes) and both of us are a-okay... weight, blood pressure &
cholesterol are all LOWER.
Mother's Day & Father's Day... perfect... four new golf shirts &
5 pars for Lar,
Salado won state in baseball. Tiger won the
Open, Boston won the NBA Championship. The Jenna Bush pre-wedding party here in
Salado was big news. Also hundreds of huge oak trees destroyed
in Mill Creek & Salado by 75+ mph winds... we had little damage to our
recently trimmed trees. Kudos to the golf course maintenance crew... the golf course was back in operation in two
days. During our month long
2008 RV Golf/vacation trip
we visited in Boerne , visited
in Tucson, played golf with Jer & Carol
in Phoenix & watched the Super Bowl,
checked our
waterfront
lots in CA,
visited with Neil & Debby in Desert
Shores and had dinner, visited with Dean & Carlene
in Desert Shores and had lunch, also visited with Don & Nelly in Palm Desert
before heading back for a little golf & a week with
Jerry and Carol
in Phoenix and
ended with three days in Boerne.
2007
- Getting settled in Salado...
After the decision to
move from Boerne, TX to Salado, TX, a golf
cart friendly village, was made in August,
2007, we immediately purchased a home, began moving and started some significant inside remodeling
(45 miles north of Austin and 155 miles south of Dallas on Interstate 35 exit
285)... 432 O. W. Lowrey, Salado, TX 76571... two miles from the I35 & the
shopping center!
Built in 2000 with 3,000 sf heated
(an ideal double master suite floor plan
with all living areas in-between), 500 sf
of covered patio, and a three car garage - 840 sf.
We doubled the garage space with a custom RV area &
expanded patio area & added walkways, privacy walls and
landscaping
on our 3/4 acre
lot in Mill Creek Springs... on the golf course & a Salado Creek tributary
on the
Springs #3 course where the 1st, 2nd, 8th & 9th holes converge.
Mill #1 - Creek #2
-
Springs #3 are
all challenging courses - at least two impossible holes on each course and
two others that are tough, and five that
will give you a par if you are hitting
well. Robert
Trent Jones Jr. and the original owners redesigned a challenge... for sure!
On October 1, 2007, we joined
Mill Creek Golf
Club and on November 1 played the Creek
course 9 for the first time and
attended a membership appreciation dinner hosted by
course owner Morris Foster (A local & owner of key anchor properties in of
the Village of Salado & a former EXXON CEO!) and joined
nearly everyone in attendance in embracing his
"A New Beginning"
concept. We are very, very lucky
to have a guy like Morris here... as this
"is a great 27 holes and the only game in town"... a good place to kickback and enjoy life.
Each nine holes from the White tees - about 3,000 yards and the Red tees -
about 2,500 yards ...
rated at 70 - 72 & slopes of 120 - 124... (we
avoid the Blue tees). Generally, the weather in
central Texas is perfect & conducive to year round play sometime during
the day...
330 days/yr according to Golf Digest... and we have it accessible out our back
door with our golf cart.
It took
five months
to move from Boerne and get settled in Salado and
another 5 months to get
the house sold. Just over 32" of
rain in 2007.The Spurs won it all, plenty
of golf and our zero stress time really
began! Fon had a great visit with her sisters in CO and Clyde and
I played eight rounds of golf in 6 days in OK... We visited
some old friends on our 2007 RV golf/vacation trip
to FL after Clyde
& Wanda spent most of January here.... great visit and lots of golf and
puzzles! Clyde birdied
the
18th hole at Alamo on January 21 and I got a
birdie on February 20 at Champion Golf Club
in FL where Fon
also had a golfing event.
2005 - 2006 - The transition from CA to TX... In December, 2004 we became Texans again after we purchased a 1.9 acre Hill Country home in Boerne, TX and moved from Desert Shores, CA (Near La Quinta/Palm Desert). In May, 2005 the remodeling began. After we finished, we began playing the back nine at Alamo Golf Club in San Antonio, 2,200 yards... par 32... two - three days a week... 1 3/4 hours walking the course was perfect for us as we learned the game & became "bogey" golfers!
We bought our 1978 GMC Royale 26' motorhome by Coachman (TZE368V101571) from it's original hometown... Sequim, WA & arrived in TX after a three week 2,500 mile, August, 2006 drive... 3/4 of the 13,000 units made by GMC from 1973 - 1978 are still on the road today. During the trip we had a great time visiting Jer & Carol in Spokane, WA, Dan & Joy in Centennial, CO and Clyde & Wanda in Laverne, OK.
